One of the reasons I put 2 or 3 jokes in our churches Bulletin each week is that sometimes people walk in the door in a bad mood for various reasons. If they open the bulletin a few minutes before church and get a laugh they will feel better. Your mood will affect the way you respond to the service.
If you sit there and glare at the world, just go thru some of the motions and dare the preacher to reach you or dare God to bless you, it ain't happening. But if you willingly worship and praise the Lord, you will receive something from God.
If you are in a bad mood, it's hard to get into a church service. But sometimes it takes a humorous comment in a testimony or the usher dropping the offering plate, the preacher tripping on the way to the pulpit, just something to make you smile to change your mood.
I heard a 16-year-old boy telling the church to pray for his dad who was in the hospital. He said that he had visited his dad the day before and wanted the church to pray for his ''bed partner''. The entire congregation of 600 people lost it laughing. The lad had meant to say ''Roommate''.
Once a minister was teaching on Jonah and the Whale. He said that Jonah was swallowed by a ''Whale of a belly''. He laughed so hard that he almost had to dismiss service.
It's hard to be angry, dissatisfied, depressed or sad when you are having a good laugh. So if you are having a bad day today, take time to laugh.
