Making decisions in the dark can lead to some regrettable consequences. Back in the days before electricity, a tightfisted old farmer was taking his hired man to task for carrying a lighted lantern when he went to call on his best girl.
"Why," he exclaimed, "when I went a-courtin' I never carried one of them things. I always went in the dark."
"Yes," the hired man said wryly," and look what you got!"
And then there was the New York boy visiting family in Louisiana. As he was being led through the swamps of Louisiana by his cousin he asked: "Is it true that an alligator won't attack you if you carry a flashlight?"
The cousin smirked and replied, "Depends on how fast ya carry the flashlight."
(C'mon laugh, its ok!)
John 1
1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2. The same was in the beginning with God.
3. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
6. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Matt 5: 14. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
- The stars and moon give light to a darkened world at night time. The light they give is not their own light, but the light of the sun that they reflect.
- Jesus is the true light we are the moon and the stars, we simply reflect HIS LIGHT!
- Consider a light bulb, in and of itself it does not give any light. HOWEVER when you connect it up to a power source, it gives light in darkness. Without a power source, you have nothing.
The two ways to get light is via reflection or a power source.
When I was a scout they taught us various ways to create light. If you took a light bulb, a piece of wire and a battery, you could create light. Wrap the wire around the bulb and tape one end of the wire to the negative end of the battery and then tape the other side to the positive end, you had light.
My grandfather had a small flashlight bulb with wire wrapped around it and taped in place. He used it to test the power in a battery. If it lit up when the touched the wire to both sides, it was a good battery. It could also be used for an emergency flashlight.
Other ways to make Light
- Take a magnifying glass, let the sun shine through it and start a fire. That fire then becomes your light.
- The scouts taught us about friction and rubbing wood together to create fire, which in turn creates light.
- We'd dip a wick into wax and make candles, then light them with a match to create a light.
- My aunt taught mt to take a candle and light it (power source the match) THEN set it in front of a mirror and you have double the light.
Jesus is the light; we have to reflect that light to a world full of darkness. We can reflect that light but if you have the Holy Ghost, you have a power source that will enable to really light it up.
