7. And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
Noting knowing that her husband died, the wife shows up to bring more money. I think it is really interesting that they came separately, did they want to really look good? They must have because after planning this, she arrived 3 hours later. I am curious, they did pretend that they each sold a possession?
8. And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
Peter gives her a chance to redeem herself, by asking if this was the amount she sold the land for. One translation says this: Give me an answer: was this amount of money the price of the land? (Basic English Bible) She had a chance to say, No sir, this is just a portion, but she blundered ahead and said Yes this is the amount.
Do you wonder if Peter wanted to cry as he spoke the next words?
9. Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
Why did you do it?
Why did you agree to lie?
The question went unanswered and like us, it seems that Peter really wanted to know why!
It wasn't the amount, it wasn't the money, it was the lie. It was the attempt to mislead the apostles and pretend to be doing something that they weren't really doing. You see no matter what you do or say, God knows! You cannot hide from God.
10. Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
Its one of the oddest stories in the bible, there is not much background on this couple.
Did they need the money?
Were they stingy?
Were they greedy or were they simply trying to look holier than they really were? No matter why they did it, they both paid the price for lying to the Holy Ghost.
When we try to impress people and be what we are not, we are being dishonest which is bad enough, but when we try to impress God, we are making a mistake. God is not wanting to be impressed, he just wants us to love, obey and serve him.
