John 8 : 44. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
II Corinth 11: 13. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
14. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
15. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
In the movie "The Usual Suspects" we hear the quote, "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing people he didn't exist." It is as valid a statement that we'll ever hear from the movies. The devil, of course, does exist but he knows that his effectiveness is in staying behind the scenes. He's a deceiver. It is through his lies and half-truths that he can lure people away from God's protection. There are very few who would be so foolish as to worship Satan directly. Countless people have worshipped him indirectly by turning their backs on God and following the many false idols behind which the devil hides.
