Mothers

My mother gave me instructions on what I couldn’t write about her: I cannot tell you any stories about frantic searches for missing car keys or misplaced eye glasses nor am I allowed to tell you how old she is. (I am allowed to tell you that my mother is exactly 24 years older than me) However she is at an age where most moms have retired, yet she works 30 to 40 hours per week at a day care center and recently finished a college course to be a certified child care worker. (4.0 Grade point average)

During high school, I was in the Marching Band and although my mother game to our concerts and watched us in parades, she didn’t get a chance to see any of our fantastic half time shows. Why? She just doesn’t like football. But her friend friend did and she came a time or two. You know, sort of filling in. It’s what friends do.

A few months ago her friend passed away; her daughter recently started attending an Pentecostal church and asked my mother to come to their Mothers - Daughters banquet. Cindy said that her real mom is gone, but my mom is the next best thing. (Yes my mom cried) This weekend my mom is filling in, it’s what friends do.

My friend Earl called me one day and wanted to know if it was OK for him to start calling my mother ‘’MOM’’. (His mom went on to be with the Lord) Of course it is, and so he has a ‘’fill in mom’’, after all, it’s what friends do!

If someone you know cannot be with their mother for whatever reason, don’t be selfish, share yours: after all… it’s what friends do!
